So let us meet him!

Donald was born in Keighley on the 1 September 1939. (The day war broke out) one of 16 siblings, 8 brothers and 6 sisters, and for 24 years lived in the same house. He likes to think that for some reason he was born at the exact time the Germans invaded Poland! Not so Donald you were in fact born some 3 hours later!

He left school at the age of 15 and was apprenticed to the Keighley Engineering firm of Judson and Hudson as an apprentice millwright. He qualified after 6 years at the age of 21.

His Engineering career took him through 3 engineering companies until the age of 35 when he re-joined Judson and Hudson and stayed with them until he took early retirement at the age of 60 brought on because of a heart attack.

During his time in engineering his work as designer/maker and fitter of various and varied machinery took him around the world. He particularly remembers one trip to Iran where after swimming in the bowl of an extinct volcano and eating what appeared to be beautifully ripe Watermelon, he made contact with the local lavatorial facility, and basically stayed there for a week!

He met his wife Marion in the 1982 and they married in 1983. He tells me that it was and is the best thing that ever happened to him. And they have been happily married ever since.

Donald joined Probus on 1 June 1998 and has tried to attend every Tuesday meeting ever since, and it was through Probus that he made many lifelong friends, some of whom have sadly passed on.

He was instrumental in purchasing and part paying for the electrically driven screen (originally purchased for the now defunct Halifax film and video club) and which we now use regularly.

He took on the task of speaker finder shortly after joining and kept on until Peter Bowerman took over some two seasons ago.

He took on the task of Social Secretary until relieved of such by David Thorpe. When asked why, he replied “When you join you just DO!”

His wife Marion has been part of the Coffee team since 1998.

He has seen through the amalgamation of the three separate clubs into one i.e. Savile Calder and Halifax.

His biggest regrets are

Not seeing Elvis Presley when he came to England (He never did) having saved up £200 to do so.

Not being able see Andre Rieux live in his hometown of Maastricht,

He did make it up however by showing DVD recordings of various Rieux shows at the club whenever he could!!!

And so, he and Marion move to SWANLAND into a McCarthy and Stone development, Swanland is on the North side of the A63, 11 miles from the centre of Hull. They COMPLETE this Friday and hope to move next Monday complete with the two electric buggies and of course the Cat.

Donald and Marion, we shall miss you both, you will have your electric car back and Marion’s son Steve will be keeping an eye on you both.

On behalf of the President and all the Club members, thank you for everything and good luck and happiness in your future home.

We will of course come to visit in the future.

That is Donald Booth

Flowers and Card (president).

GOOD MORNING LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THIS MORNING WE HAVE WITH US ONE OF OUR MEMBERS WHO WILL BE LEAVING HALIFAX FOR PASTURES NEW POSSIBLY WITHIN THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS.
